ALL FUTURE HIGH SCHOOL TEEN DRIVERS
It's crucial that parents and guardians take an active role in their teenagers' drivers education. They should ensure that their children learn how to drive from qualified professionals who can teach them the right skills and techniques to stay safe on the road.
From the Owner, who is the Iowa Driver Ed State Association President and Central Regions Board Member for ADTSEA(American Driver & Traffic Safety Education Association)
With the rising costs of fuel, insurance, high maintenance to driver education cars, and reduction of driving instructors in the state, we unfortunately will be raising our prices for Driver Education effective Jan 1, 2025.
Driver Schools are not immune to the rising costs of inflation. We provide an essential service in providing driving skills training to new teen drivers. It requires patient instructors who take courses to become certified who are willing to work after school, evenings and many weekends. And this is not a job you can pay just $15/hr and expect the best instruction for the new teen driver. It requires we work with your student and drive with them as much as we can in addition to what a parent does. We spend a lot of money on gas and our expenses on maintenance have increased a lot over the last few years. The insurance we are required to carry is expensive and has gone up twice in 2024. We expect it to go up again in 2025.
All driving schools in Iowa have done their best to keep the costs as low as possible. But we need to have newer driver education vehicles, with updated technology to keep up with the current vehicles they will be driving at home. And to provide the best education to your new teen driver, we need to be able to have dedicated instructors invested in the safety of their students.
There are only about 400 driving instructors certified in Iowa at this time. We are training new ones every month, but it it will take time to rebuild our numbers across the state. Many retired after COVID and we have been trying to get new instructors trained and hired since then. We know lots of parents do not what to do parent-taught as teaching your son or daughter to drive is often not what you want to do as a parent. We understand that. That is why the private and public driving schools exist Iowa. Please remember that we are trying to provide the best training for your son or daughter so they can be prepared for driving in Iowa. We live in a state with diverse weather and lots of roadway challenges depending on where a student lives. All certified instructors receive lots of hours of training. Please understand that price increases were inevitable and we are seeing this in most businesses. We are very appreciative of your business and we will continue to strive to provide the best instruction possible to every student that comes to Safer Driver Solutions.
Just a note as to how Iowa compares to the rest of the US in terms of cost of driver education, the average cost of driver education across the country is $650. Some states are much higher and only 3 states are at Iowa's current pricing and that is Montana, Kansas and North Dakota. Those states do not offer driver education across the state and some of them only have small programs.
Below, we have had to restructure out Regions to accommodate the distance to travel to students. Refer to the new map. This map will take effect Jan 1, 2025.

- To meet Iowa Department of Transportation guidelines, all new drivers MUST show proficiency in city driving, residential driving and 2 and 4 lane driving both during the daytime and at night.
- As a parent or guardian, dedicating just 15 minutes of your day to practice with your new driver can make all the difference in their road proficiency. Let's work together to ensure our roads are filled with safer drivers.
